If you are going through a separation or divorce, it can be very difficult, regardless of who initiated it. The process itself can turn your world upside down, making it difficult to get through your days or stay productive. That said, there are a few things you can do to make it through this adjustment.
- Know that it’s OK to have different feelings: Feeling sad, angry, exhausted, frustrated, and/or confused is completely normal. These feelings can be intense leading you to feel anxious about the future. Even if the marriage was unhealthy, venturing into the unknown is frightening. Your reactions to the divorce will likely lessen over time.
- Give yourself a break: It’s ok to give yourself permission to feel grief. It is very important to take time to heal, regroup, and re-energize.
- Don’t go through this alone: It might be hard to share you feelings with your family and friends, especially if you are not one to open up. That said, isolating yourself can raise your stress levels, increase depression, reduce your concentration, and get in the way of your work, relationships, and overall health.
- Take care of yourself emotionally and physically: Create steps to ensure you are taking care of yourself and your body. Finding time to exercise, eat well, and relax can help you find a normal routine.
