May 17th, 2016

In addition to attorney’s fees, there are several other costs associated with getting a divorce. This week on the blog, a Portland Oregon divorce attorney will be discussing several tips on how to avoid unnecessary costs during divorce.

  • hundreds of dollarsTalk to your lawyer consistently- Hiring a good attorney is a great investment. Use your attorney’s expertise to discuss your financial goals throughout the divorce process so that you can work together to manage strategy and fees.
  • …but don’t use your lawyer as your therapist- Your feelings are important, but your attorney’s goal is to get you as close as possible to your legal goals during divorce. Talk to a friend or see a counselor so that you can let your lawyer focus on their job and avoid running up your legal fees.
  • Avoid revenge tactics- During a hostile divorce, you might be tempted to use revenge tactics to make your ex spouse angry. These will almost certainly stimulate a letter from the other lawyer, running up your bill.  Before deciding on your next step, ask yourself “If this is reported to the judge, will I be proud to discuss it?” If your answer is no, then just don’t do it.
