Is Divorce Contagious? – Divorce Attorneys Portland OR

July 16th, 2014

Although divorce rate statistics can vary a little according to each different study, it’s widely accepted that the divorce rate is about 50%. In other words, just about half of all marriages end in divorce. Divorce happens amongst all kinds of couples and it affects people from all walks of life. However, could divorce actually be contagious?

According to a study earlier this year, by researchers from Brown University, Yale University and UC San Diego, 75 percent of people are more likely to get divorced if one of their friends is divorced.

One possible cause is that many people who are afraid to go through with divorce often get the courage to proceed after they’ve seen one of their friends go through with it. It’s called a “copycat divorce,” and it appears to be a growing trend.
