This week on the blog, I’m using my experience as a family lawyer in Portland, to tell people about what I’ve learned seeing many marriages which are ending, and translating that into how to keep marriages healthy.
Earlier in the week we talked about the importance of continuing to date your spouse, even once you have added responsibilities to your life like careers, pets, and children.
Today I want to discuss another topic:
Showing your Love through Kindness and Respect
Time and time again you have probably heard the phrase “Love is a verb.” In my experience, this is a true statement. To keep a marriage flourishing, it is important to use respect and kindness to show, and tell, your spouse that you love them.
By the time people come in to get a divorce, they can often not even communicate any more. Fostering a relationship where respectful and kind communication is expected can help keep people from heading towards divorce.
At the end of a long day, it may be difficult to put out the effort to show your spouse you love them when all you want to do is relax, but making that effort is a lot easier than dealing with the constant stress of arguing with your spouse.
Later this week we will give another tip on how to keep a marriage healthy. Check back for more.
